TIFR & its sister institutes — where your PhD actually happens
Clearing TIFR GS / JEST is the doorway. The next question is: which campus, which department, which programme? Here is a clear, official-sources-only guide to the institutes you can join through TIFR's Graduate Programme.
TIFR Fellowship / Stipend (Physics PhD & Integrated PhD)
All figures below are quoted directly from TIFR's official Fellowship page.
- PhD: Monthly fellowship of ₹37,000 (+ hostel accommodation or HRA as applicable), enhanced to ₹42,000 after registration.
- Integrated PhD (I-PhD): ₹25,000 / month for the first year. On satisfactory performance, enhanced to ₹37,000 / month; further raised to ₹42,000 after registration for PhD.
- Contingency grant, conference travel grants and on-campus / HRA accommodation as per TIFR rules. (See official page for the latest exact numbers.)
Integrated PhD vs PhD — which one do you apply for?
Integrated PhD (I-PhD) is a single five-year programme designed for students who have completed their undergraduate degree (typically BSc / BTech). It starts with coursework + an MSc exit option after two years, and continues seamlessly into a PhD on satisfactory performance.
The direct PhD programme is for candidates who already hold a Master's degree (MSc / equivalent). Coursework is shorter and the focus moves to research from Year 1.
Both routes go through the TIFR Graduate School Admissions (GS) exam — the same exam this site prepares you for. Read the latest official advertisement here: TIFR GS-2026 Advertisement (PDF).
The four institutes you can join in Physics
TIFR — Mumbai (Main Campus)
Colaba, MumbaiTIFR Mumbai is the main campus of the Tata Institute of Fundamental Research — a deemed-to-be-University and a National Centre of the Government of India for Nuclear Science & Mathematics. The School of Natural Sciences here runs the flagship PhD and Integrated PhD programmes in Physics across five departments, covering experimental and theoretical physics from the tiniest subatomic particles to the whole universe.
- Department of Astronomy & Astrophysics (DAA)
- Department of Condensed Matter Physics & Materials Science (DCMP&MS)
- Department of High Energy Physics (DHEP)
- Department of Nuclear & Atomic Physics (DNAP)
- Department of Theoretical Physics (DTP)
NCRA-TIFR — National Centre for Radio Astrophysics
PuneNCRA-TIFR is India's premier institute for radio astronomy and one of the best in this field worldwide. It operates the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT). Research at NCRA-TIFR is centred on low-frequency radio astronomy, with faculty working across solar physics, pulsars, AGN, galaxies, the interstellar/intergalactic medium and cutting-edge astronomical instrumentation.
